How Chiropractic Works

Chiropractic is based on removing structural and postural imbalances to allow our body to heal itself. The network of nerves and signals from your brain, down your spinal cord and to the network of nerves must be allowed to flow freely without any interruption. Chiropractors have the ability and skill to remove these interruptions or misalignments, allowing the body to perform as it was meant to.

If you've ever been in a car accident, played a sport, fallen down, or simply bumped into something too hard, it's possible that your body isn't functioning at your best due to a misalignment. There are many potential mechanical, structural, or chemical causes for misalignment. Allowing a chiropractor to get you back on track both chemically and structurally will bring your body back to the proper state it should be in.

The History of Chiropractic

Chiropractic care actually dates all the way back to the time of Hippocrates but the modern day school of chiropractic treatment began in 1985. Dr. Daniel Palmer adjusted a man who'd lost his hearing and when he heard a pop in his back, his misaligned vertebrae was adjusted and his hearing improved.

The medical community criticized this new technique but the people who followed in Palmer's footsteps had found a new way of dealing with illness and disease. His theories are still discussed in the chiropractic world today. There is still a school named after Dr. Palmer as well as thousands of chiropractic students across the country.

What is a Subluxation?

When a vertebrae becomes misaligned or moves out of its normal position, it is referred to as a subluxation. Subluxations can be caused by a wide range of issues ranging from a minor slip to a car accident or sudden trauma. When a vertebrae is subluxated, it begins to put pressure on nerves, blood vessels, and all the areas around it. The subluxation interrupts the natural pathways the messages sent from the brain need in order to be completed properly.

If a subluxation remains untreated, the spine and surrounding features such as discs can begin to degenerate. This degeneration becomes more difficult to reverse over time, as the surrounding muscles, nerves, and bones begin to adjust to the new shape. The longer this goes on, the more difficult and longer it takes to repair the damage. Chiropractic care is usually the answer.

Four Phases of Spinal Degeneration

Phase 1
The first stage of spinal degeneration begins when there is a minor loss of normal spine balance and spinal curvature. The surrounding features of the spine such as nerves, discs, and joints begin to age quicker and are more stressed. This stage of degeneration is rarely accompanied with any major pain. At this point, there is a good chance that with proper chiropractic care, you can return to normal.

Phase 2
In the second stage, there is a narrowing of the discs and potential deformation in the bones. Your posture may begin to degenerate as well at this point. As the spinal canal begins to narrow, there are often significant aches and pains. Fatigue and stress are more common at this stage as well but there is a good chance of improvement at this stage with the proper care.

Phase 3
In the third stage of spinal degeneration, there is significant physical and mental involvement. At this point, there is most likely nerve damage as well as deformation of the bones and discs. A significant loss of energy and height at this point may happen but some reversal is possible.

Phase 4
In the fourth stage of spinal degeneration, most damages are permanent, including scar tissue, nerve damage and deformation. At this point, the condition is irreversible. Management of pain and discomfort is your best option by phase four.
